Nose: Aromas of dried hay, honeybush and wet stone. Palate: A refreshing palate that balances a gentle salinity with ripe pear, peach and green apple. A soft, long-lasting finish carries notes of spice and nuttiness. Vintage: The period leading up to harvest was marked by record winter rainfall that replenished the soils and secured vine health. A dry spring and summer kept disease pressure low, while cooler ripening conditions allowed steady fruit development, preserving natural acidity and enhancing aromatic complexity. Vinification: The grapes were harvested at optimal sugar levels and pressed 100% as whole bunches. After natural settling, fermentation took place in used 500-liter French oak barrels, allowing the subtle character of the variety to express itself with purity. Viticulture: Comes from old bush vines planted in 1966 on the summit of the Piekenierskloof Pass, where winters are cold and summers are hot. Large clusters produced a balanced mix of green, yellow and lightly sun-kissed berries, each contributing unique flavor nuances. The pristine terroir of the site and the healthy vines yield grapes of exceptional concentration, salinity and complexity.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
