Holden Manz Winery
The Holden Manz Winery is characterized by a highly modern design combined with state-of-the-art technology in the wine cellar. This enables the Winemaker Thierry Haberer to express Holden Manz's special terroir. The 22-hectare Winery is located in the farthest corner of the Franschhoek Valley and is only about an hour's drive from Cape Town. The two owners Gerard Holden and Migo Manz have already received numerous national and international awards with their Winery. After the acquisition in 2010 (formerly "Klein Genoot"), the two began restoring both the wine cellar and the rest of the Winery. Gerard and Migo operate, in addition to the wine cellar, an exclusive 5-star hotel with international cuisine at the highest level. The South African art exhibited at the Winery perfectly completes the "Holden Manz experience."
Tasting notes
The Proprietors' Blend White from Winery Holden Manz impresses with a breathtaking composition of the three grape varieties Chardonnay, Viognier, and Chenin Blanc.
A wonderfully perfumed nose leads to a full, fruity mouthfeel with a long-lasting floral finish. The 12 months of lees contact gives the white wine an elegant creaminess and complexity. The Proprietors' Blend White 2019 from Holden Manz impresses with elegant aromas of citrus fruits, apple, and white flowers, paired with a beautiful minerality.
The berries of the Proprietors' Blend White were handpicked in the coolness of the early morning. The blending of the grape varieties took place at the end of the year. Prior to that, the individual components were aged separately in 225 and 500-liter barrels made of French oak. This white wine from Holden Manz delivers a naturally fresh yet creamy palate.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
