Kanonkop Winery
The Winery Kanonkop has been family-owned for 4 generations and is currently run by the brothers Paul and Johann Krige. The name Kanonkop is derived from a hill (kop) on the Simonsberg above the Winery, from which a cannon (kanon) was fired in the 17th and 18th centuries to announce the arrival of sailing ships in Table Bay. The booming of the cannon was the signal for the local farmers, who were waiting to load their wagons with fresh fruit and vegetables and begin the 50-kilometer journey to the harbor. The first wines labeled Kanonkop were produced in 1973. The beginning of international recognition is largely owed to the unfortunately deceased Paul Sauer, who created the first wines.
Tasting notes
The Kadette Cape Blend from Winery Kanonkop flows into the glass with strong carmine red hues. With aromas of raspberries, dark cherries, plums, cinnamon, and cloves, the Kadette Cape Blend impresses on the nose.
Smooth, elegant tannins and a fresh acid edge are beautifully balanced with a lively fruit explosion on the palate. Juicy aromas of red and black fruits and a hint of Chocolate dominate the long finish.
The fermentation of the Kadette Cape Blend took place in open fermentation vessels. The juice was drawn off the skins after 3 to 5 days. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 14 months in French oak barrels.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
