The story of Weingut Pongrácz is inseparably linked with the life of Desiderius Pongrácz , a Hungarian count who found a new home in South Africa after the Second World War. In the Stellenbosch wine region , he shaped the South African wine industry from 1973 onward as Chief Viticultural Advisor to the Distillers Corporation. He championed the introduction and spread of noble grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and revolutionized viticulture practices by calling for careful selection of high-quality planting material.

Desiderius Pongrácz's vision was to improve the quality and variety of the grape varieties grown in South Africa. His commitment led to the modernization of the vineyards and laid the foundation for the reputation of South African wines today. He documented his expertise in his standard work, “Practical Viticulture.”

Weingut Pongrácz honors its legacy by focusing on the production of sparkling wines using the traditional method, the Méthode Cap Classique. These sparkling wines, composed mainly of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, are a testament to his tireless dedication to quality and innovation in South African winemaking.
