Grape Variety Syrah
Syrah is one of the great classic red wine grape varieties of the world. Its origin is in the northern Rhône Valley in France, but today it is widespread on all continents. In Australia, Syrah is known as Shiraz; in South Africa, the variety shapes many of the country's most characterful red wines.
Syrah shows an impressive range of styles. The aromas range from black pepper, violet, and dark berries to olives and smoke. Depending on origin, Syrah can be cool and fresh or lush and ripe, but almost always remains spicy, structured, and with a clear fruit core.
The grape variety is a true team player and is often used in blends, for example with Grenache and Mourvèdre. At the same time, Syrah shines as a single-varietal wine ranging from juicy and easy-drinking to complex and age-worthy. Rosé and sparkling wine based on Syrah are also possible.
Historically, Syrah is considered an old Rhône variety; genetic studies identify Dureza and Mondeuse Blanche as its parents. From France, it spread across the New World to Australia, where Shiraz became synonymous with opulent, powerful red wines. Today, Syrah stands for diversity, typicity, and great aging potential.
This Syrah pairs excellently with grilled or pan-seared beef and lamb, where its pepper spice and dark fruit perfectly capture the roasted aroma. Equally harmonious are Iberian -inspired dishes like Jamón, grilled Chorizo , or pork from the grill. With herb-seasoned poultry – such as thyme or rosemary – it brings freshness and structure. Herb-spiced stews and braised dishes benefit from its warm spice vein. Spicy veggie cuisine with mushrooms or eggplant also works very well.
